MAHAMA SACKS DCOP KOFI BOAKYE
Ghana’s President John Dramani Mahama on wednesday evening sacked DCOP Kofi Boakye, the Ashanti Regional Police Commander for his inability to let peace prevail in Agogo.
In a letter signed on his behalf by Honourable Julius Debrah, the President’s Chief of Staff, the president attributed the dismissal to “negligence” on the part of DCOP Kofi Boakye for not responding to the havoc that is being wreaked in the Agogo enclave by the Fulani herdsmen.
DCOP Kofi Boakye, who is on record for arresting the ‘man insane’ Kwaw Kese, is to vacate his office immediately as the letter described his dismissal as “Summary with immediate effect”.
Agogo community in the Ashanti region has been having unending trouble with Fulani herdsmen who often allow their cattle to destroy farms and kill or rape anyone who attempts to stop them.
The Ghana Police Service has failed to enforce a court order issued in 2011 for the Fulanis to be moved from Agogo, leading to accusations of collusion.
In the latest sign of their displeasure, the Agogo Youth Association, at a press conference in the town, vowed to prevent the celebration of any festival or anniversary of any chief in Agogo until the troubles with the Fulani herdsmen is resolved. The press conference was addressed by Asante Akyem North MP, Kwadwo Baah Agyemang and Ernest Owusu Bempah, Communications Director of National Democratic Party.
Locals are frustrated as some 25 natives of Agogo and the surrounding areas have been killed by the nomads under bizarre conditions.
Women in particular say they are unable to go their farms unaccompanied for fear of their lives.
